This week’s 5 - five things from the news / industry / office / ether that have caught our eye this week.

1. Abercrombie & Fitch what’s up with you?

Yet another PR fail for the shop that likes to sell their clothing in the dark (maybe to try and hide their uglier customers?) @gregkarber comes up with a bloody good way of making a stance here: http://newsfeed.time.com/2013/05/15/watch-abercrombie-fitch-for-the-homeless/

Get on board.

NB. The lookalike comparison made at 0.22 is really quite on point

2. DailyMailOnline - the world’s water cooler

That’s what it’s positioning itself as, as the guilty pleasure continues to ‘create conversations’ with it’s content.  As America’s 3rd largest online newspaper, with a staff of just 80 based there, it’s obviously doing something right….they’re just lucky they dont have to endure the print version.

3. Nike ID x Liberty prints.

Yes, that’s right you can design your own NIKE trainers using some of Liberty’s prints now.  I don’t think I need to say any more.

4. Grandma’s Jamaican proverbs

There’s one for every occasion.  You probably wont understand them and will need to have the actual meaning explained, but that’s what makes them so good right?  My Grandma had plenty, a personal fave:

“the higher the monkey climb, the more him batty exposed”

(the more successful you are in life, the more you expose yourself to those who may want to shoot you down)

I miss hearing her words of wisdom, so we’ll be sharing a few on here over the next few weeks.

5. 10 Years of Igniton (Remix)

Prepare to feel old as one of R Kelly’s classics is 10 YEARS OLD TODAY!!

It’s the freakin’ weekend baby and I’m about have me some fun.

This week’s 5 - five things from the news / industry / office / ether that have caught our eye this week.

We should have done this on Friday, sorry, the four day week just ran away with us.  However, on the upside it does mean we can include this week’s first offering:

1. There’s a new Lady in Red in the skies

image

Ok so it was due to him losing a bet (and for charity), but I’m sure there’s many out there who would have found some excuse as to why they couldn’t dress as an air stewardess and serve people on a rival’s flight.  Not @richardbranson though and we like that fact, a lot….not a bad PR move at all either.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-22499827

2. How not to take press shots

Wise words of advice for budding, established and DJs at any stage in between can be found here: http://www.inthemix.com/features/55228/How_not_to_take_a_DJ_press_shot

The shameful thing is, we’ve actually had to use some of these in the past, not mentioning any names….

3. Drunken Radio

So Richard will be remembered pretty positively for his stunt, the DJs in the shots above not quite so much, but if you want a true lesson in how to make sure people remember you in your workplace then take a leaf out of Paula White’s book.  Turn up for your last day drunk and get sent home after half an hour.  No biggy you might think, but when it’s your job to present live radio for @bbcradiostoke it could lead to some embarrasing evidence: http://radiotoday.co.uk/2013/05/paula-white-pulled-off-last-bbc-show-early/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=paula-white-pulled-off-last-bbc-show-early

4. Google - plus users, minus usage

“We’re getting more people sign up to Google + than to Twitter” we heard the internet giants boasting recently. Yes, but according to Mashable they spend an average of just over 6 minutes on there (FB users while away just over 6 hours as a comparison).  As sticky as a bowl of water was the best phrase we heard to sum up their issues.

5. The Great Global Bake Off

No Mary Berry I’m afraid but this Sunday is @worldbakingday.  Bake brave and try something new they say, maybe one of the 100 skill level graded recipes they have here: http://worldbakingday.com/

After the success of this raspberry and coconut creation a couple of weeks back I’ll be getting involved (and the office will be well fed on Monday).

Were people in the 90’s skinnier because they danced like this?  Our resident ageing raver was found reminiscing over this yesterday and yes, the male dancer is wearing white gloves.

This week’s 5 - five things from the news / industry / office / ether that have caught our eye this week.

1. Facebook fi dead

Well, it is amongst young people who are deserting the platform as it becomes over run by parents and PRs - so said Radio 1 Newsbeat and 1xtra News’ Rod Mackenzie this week (@rjdmc).  Snapchat, Vine, Keek and of course this beautiful thing we call Tumblr are taking over, and to be honest if FB carry on with their ‘suggested’ posts (no I DO NOT want to join the Mormon Church thanks) us oldies will be following suit pretty soon too.

2. Permanent Kisstory

Yes!  @kissfmuk launch a 24 hour perma-station for their best output rather than just an hour every day.  What’s not to like about that?

3. RIP Mac Daddy

But in sadder news we say goodbye to one half of Kisstory favourites Kriss Kross. RIP Chris Miller, and thank you for making us J-U-M-P.

4.  How not to layout a newspaper

As far as we’re concerned @buzzfeeduk make good lists of funny things. This week’s fave is media realated so gets a mention, Mail Online - up your sub-editing game or you will soon be on this list too: http://www.buzzfeed.com/lukelewis/newspaper-and-magazine-layout-disasters

5. Question - How hot does it have to be to wear a bikini in the park?

I love the sunshine, we all do, just ask Roy Ayers.  However, us English have a tendency to get a bit giddy at the slightest sign of our closest star, as demonstarted by the amount of bikini wearers on London Fields this week. Yes, it’s been nice outside but if it’s under 20 degress celsius, is a bikini not taking it a bit too far?

Apparently not.

This week’s 5 - five things from the news / industry / office / ether that have caught our eye this week.

1. Computer Love

Zapp once sang about it and now Durex have developed Fundawear - underwear operated with a smart phone, so long distance lovers can feel each others touch.  It’s only in Australia right now, and you can’t actually buy it, but new technology to help you get your freak on still deserves a mention.

See it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qb7DN3kpl2o

Hear it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VR0E4Nf_yvE

2. Chipotle goodness

Office condiment of the week goes to the smoky chipotle salsa we sampled from @marcelaskitchen.  It’s lovely. Try it. That’s all.

3. JLS split

*Insert joke of choice about their branded condom range here*  It didn’t do their ticket sales any harm either…..

4. The rolodex is done

Thanks to Card Munch from Linked In. You snap a business card with your iPhone and it converts to a contact…no more bag / wallet / draw searching in our office anymore, trust.

5. Dancing babies

Yes, evian have bought them back, but better this time we think.  I mean, who doesn’t love a dancing baby?

This week’s 5 - five things from the news / industry / office / ether that have caught our eye this week.

1. We control the news, maybe.

The Guardian actively recruits the services of citizen journalists with the launch of @GuardianWitness.  Submit your views on their live ‘assignments’, post a new story or suggest an assignment of your own…..is this, as some people claim, the future of news reporting?  https://witness.guardian.co.uk/

2. New pub / office / sofa snacks

We discovered Soffles Pitta Chips.  Born and baked in Stoke Newington they are not only local to the office, but they are possibly the best snack since sweet & salty popcorn.  @soffleschips we salute you.

3. Covert cocktails

Our resident fashionista and man about town @ChrisChass is the man when it comes to invites and last week we joined him to venture upstairs at the Exmouth Arms to sample the wares of @5ccLondon.  Forgotten classic cocktails and exclusive vintage spirits are served in beautiful glasses and by two of the nicest people I think I’ve ever met in a pub.  It’s nothing like the pub downstairs (which is still good), but it’s our new fave hidden spot (although if you venture downstairs at Bethnall Green’s Well & Bucket, you may make a similar discovery….)

4. We’re all digital archivers (kind of)

Sometimes those Recaptcha authentication words you have to fill in when registering / buying or similar online are pretty much illegible.  Turns out that’s bacause you’re actually helping decipher and digitalise old texts where the words are often exactly that.  If enough people validate a word similarly, then it’s been deciphered.  I think this might be ye olde news to a lot of people, but to us it was new and we liked it.

5. Amazing pictures from around the world

Finally, in a week when there’s been plenty to get you down, 27 sights to remind you why earth can be incredible offered some welcome respite.

Click the link below the murmaration (love) of starlings below to see the full list.
